Member for Oxley Milton Dick has been re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives in federal parliament’s first sitting since the May election.
Mr Dick said he recognised the significance of his re-election to the position and was “grateful for the trust and goodwill shown from all sides of this chamber”.
“To be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for a second term is a profound honour, but to be elected unopposed is deeply humbling.”
In a statement to The Lake News, Mr Dick said the re-appointment would not impact his commitment to the Oxley community and said his door remained open to locals.
“Being the Member for Oxley and the re-elected Speaker of the House of Representatives is a great honour for me, but also for the electorate of Oxley,” Mr Dick said.
“Delivering for the Oxley community and standing up for the residents will always be my top priority. I will continue to ensure the Oxley electorate is not overlooked by government initiatives, and it receives what it deserves.
“Being elected as the speaker will have no impact on my role as Member for Oxley. I will always make sure our community gets its fair share.”
Labor colleague MP Joanne Ryan and Nationals MP Michael McCormack, who nominated and seconded Mr Dick as a candidate for the role, ‘dragged’ him to the speaker’s chair, as per tradition, where he made his first speech as Speaker of the 48th Parliament on Tuesday 22 July.
“Over the last three years I’ve been committed to making this place a place of change, a respectful and safe workplace,” Mr Dick said.
“I’m proud of the progress we have made, but I realise that there’s more to be done.
“Today I recommit myself to this. This term, I will continue to look for ways to improve the standards in this chamber.”
In his speech to the parliament, Mr Dick said he would priortise engagement with young Australians in the next term, announcing he would commit to “visiting every single electorate in this country.”
“During the last term, you showed a commitment to integrity,” prime minister Anthony Albanese said.
“You showed a commitment to fairness and an understanding that this institution is something that we who’ve just been sworn into office should cherish and really value.
“You are a steady hand, Mr Speaker.” In re-election, the House had shown gratitude.
