Young riders can learn how to pump, corner and jump at two free BMX workshops coming to Darra this month.
Brisbane City Council will hold the one-hour sessions at the Darra BMX park at Monier Road Park on Saturday, 22 August.
The first workshop will run from 9am to 10am, followed by a second session from 10am to 11am and both are open to riders aged five to 17, although children aged five to 15 must attend with an adult.
A qualified instructor will teach participants the fundamentals of freestyle BMX riding, including pumping through the track, taking corners and safely approaching jumps.
The free workshops are part of Brisbane City Council’s Cycling Brisbane program, which runs riding-skills activities at locations across the city.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said families did not have to travel far or spend heavily to keep children active.
“You don’t have to travel far or spend big to keep kids active, with tracks across the suburbs for different ages and skill levels,” Cr Schrinner said.
Riverhills junior rider Chloe began riding after attending a free council workshop and later won the 2025 under-11 girls’ national and Oceania BMX freestyle championships.
“I wanted to try out the workshops, and it was really fun,” she said in a recent council profile.
“A lot of the people involved were so supportive, so I started doing it even more.
“I hope I go to the Olympics.
“But we’re going to see if that happens. I’m just going to push myself and make sure I try my best,” she said.
The young rider later trained at the Darra track, Jindalee Skatepark and Newcomb Park at Riverhills.
The Darra park contains two asphalt loops, with entry-level, intermediate and advanced options designed to allow riders to progress as their confidence grows.
Shade shelters, drinking fountains, accessible toilets and an adjoining playground also make the park suitable for families accompanying younger riders.
The competition-grade park opened in May 2019 following a council investment of about $3.18 million and remains one of Brisbane’s largest BMX destinations.
The council’s free cycling programs have already helped introduce local children to the sport.
Riders should bring a suitable bike, water and an approved, properly fastened helmet.
Bookings for the August workshops can be made through Brisbane City Council’s online events calendar by searching “BMX skills” and via Eventbrite.
