A long-used pedestrian accessway connecting Kulgan Circuit and Poinsettia Street in Richlands should be reopened after fencing blocked the route, Member for Inala Margie Nightingale says.
Ms Nightingale said the accessway had for years provided a direct connection for residents travelling to schools, community organisations and nearby public transport.
The route has been used by people accessing Richlands East State School, HUB Neighbourhood Centre Inala, Inspire Youth and Family Services, Inala Wangarra, Inala Flexible School and local bus services.
Recent fencing has prevented pedestrians from using the link and Ms Nightingale says some residents are now being forced to take significantly longer routes.
“For years, this easement has provided a safe and practical connection for local residents, students, parents and community members accessing essential services and public transport,” she said.
“This isn’t just a shortcut — it’s an important community link used every day by families getting children to school, young people accessing support services, seniors visiting community organisations and residents travelling to and from bus services.”
Ms Nightingale said residents had contacted her office to raise concerns about the closure and the additional difficulties it had created.
“People should not be forced to take longer and less convenient routes to access schools, community services and public transport,” she said.
She called on the State Government to work with residents to restore access or identify another suitable solution.
“The State Government’s decision to fence off this access point appears to have been made without fully considering the impact on the people who use it every day,” Ms Nightingale said.
“I will continue fighting to have this accessway reopened and to ensure local residents have a strong voice in this process.”
