Year-long construction efforts to build 14 new social homes in Inala have finished, and residents have begun moving into the new buildings they’ll call home.
Member for Inala Margie Nightingale officially opened the homes on 14 July and said in a message to the community that it was wonderful to see the completion of great social housing projects.
“I’m delighted to be down here at Tallow St where we’ve officially opened 14 new social housing homes thanks to the former Labor government,” Ms Nightingale said.
“My team and I delivered donated furniture, white goods and essential items like cutlery, mugs and ironing boards to some of the new residents, thanks to a generous donor and with support from Inala Community House.
“I’m proud to see tenants now settled into these new social housing units, which are designed for singles and couples, helping free up larger homes for families in need.”
Residents moving into the Inala block said the new social housing had provided much-needed stability and eased their stress levels.
Of the 14 new social homes, 13 are one-bedroom apartments and one is a three-bedroom apartment. Housing of this kind is in high demand, particularly among young and older people.
“We know that one-bedroom units such as these are in high demand, particularly for young people and seniors looking to downsize,” Ms Nightingale said.
“Giving seniors the opportunity to downsize to smaller, more suitable housing allows us to free up larger social homes for families in need.”
Inala received these homes as part of a broader ‘Homes for Queenslanders’ plan introduced by the previous Labor government.
Under the same scheme, neighbouring suburb Darra also received 10 new social homes in July 2024. One resident living in the Darra complex, Anne Steele, previously lived in a three-bedroom social home which had become too big for her to manage.
“The house was getting too big for me and the steps were getting hard, and everything like that, so I’m downsizing,” Ms Steele said.
It’s sad to be leaving all my friends, but I’m only about 10 minutes away, so I can go and see them anytime.”
